Individual Counseling
Individual counseling provides a safe, healing environment to discuss anything you are concerned about—including relationship issues, childhood issues, or problems surfacing due to employment, career or personal life changes. While we are connected to our families, our friends, our work, and our communities, we also know there is value in having a space that is just for you. So while there aren’t many truly “individual” problems, we can still seek solutions, healing, and growth in an individual context.
Some of the most common reasons people reach out to us for individual therapy:
I feel anxious and/or depressed.
Life can be overwhelming. We’re trying to juggle many responsibilities and often feel like we’re coming up short. On the outside it might look like we have it all together, but inside we feel alone and empty. Sometimes we can’t keep the act going and we start missing out on life due to feelings of anxiety or depression. These feelings don’t get to define you or determine your life. Life with peace and joy is possible!
I need to learn how to cope.
Maybe you’ve found yourself in a stressful place in life and you’re turning to unhealthy things. Many of our default ways of dealing— hiding behind screens, overeating, abusing substances, hurting ourselves or others—don’t help us feel any better. Learning healthier coping strategies, facing and dealing with a variety of emotions, and learning to engage mindfully can help you deal with the ups and downs of life.
I don’t know who I am.
In a society that is full of opinions of who you should be, what you should do, how you should act, it is hard to know what is really from us versus from others. Sometimes it takes things going wrong to realize you’d been chasing the wrong dream. Or when things slow down in life, you might realize that you’re afraid of what will happen if you take a good, hard look at yourself. You have to keep yourself busy, moving, doing the next thing because slowing down will result in feeling frozen. Our busy society offers expectations of who we should be and sometimes we build our lives around what others want from us rather than from our authentic self. This leads to major emptiness and confusion. Individual therapy is a place to bring all the parts of yourself, to dissect your decisions, to discover what brings you joy, to identify your goals, and to empower you to move forward with a solid sense of self. Not only will this benefit you, but you’ll see this impact your relationships as well.
I’m worried that pain from my past is impacting my future.
Sometimes the way forward requires going back. If you have a history of painful events or memories that continue to interrupt your life, going back to make sense of those memories and find a way to move forward can be beneficial. It takes courage to face painful memories of the past and our counselors are patient and caring as they walk this journey with you. Pain from the past is inevitable, but growth in moving forward is optional. Make the decision to get healing and take back control so that wounds from the past no longer take away joy from the present.
What Is Individual Counseling?
Individual counseling is a one-on-one space to work with a therapist on the concerns, patterns, and experiences that are affecting your daily life. For some people, that means processing anxiety, depression, grief, or past pain. For others, it may mean navigating stress, major life changes, identity concerns, or learning healthier ways to cope.
Because individual therapy is centered on your personal goals, it can be a place to gain clarity, build emotional awareness, strengthen coping skills, and move toward healing at your own pace. While your relationships and circumstances may be part of the conversation, the focus stays on your growth, your story, and the support you need right now.
Who Can Benefit from Individual Therapy?
Individual therapy can be helpful for adults and teens who feel overwhelmed, stuck, emotionally exhausted, or uncertain about how to move forward. You may benefit from counseling if you are dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, self-esteem concerns, identity questions, life transitions, or the impact of painful past experiences.
It can also be a good fit if you want support understanding your emotions, clarifying boundaries, making difficult decisions, or developing healthier coping strategies. In some cases, people begin with individual counseling to work through personal challenges and later decide they would also benefit from more focused support through services like couples counseling, child therapy, or teen counseling.
What to Expect in Your First Session
Your first session is a chance to begin sharing your story in a safe, supportive environment. Your therapist will ask questions about what brings you in, what has been feeling difficult, and what you hope to gain from counseling. You do not need to have everything figured out before you start.
This first conversation is also an opportunity to get a feel for the counseling process, ask questions, and begin building trust with your therapist. From there, your counselor can help you identify goals, understand patterns more clearly, and create a path forward that feels manageable and meaningful.
If you’re ready to begin, you can request an appointment and connect with a therapist who fits your needs.
